Steve Hovey Class of 1975 Wrestling Football

Steve Hovey was one of the most talented wrestlers to graduate from Ramapo High School. As such, he is the first Hall of Fame candidate to be inducted for wrestling. Steve also played football at Ramapo and earned three letters, but it was on the wrestling mat where this 1975 graduate truly excelled. A four year varsity letter winner, it was his memorable senior year that Steve received great notoriety. Steve was chosen as captain of the wrestling team and wrestling at 200lbs, Steve compiled a single season match record of 28-1 and a school record 96.6% winning percentage. He was named to the first team all-league team and first team all-county. Steve was the District 4 Champion and the Region 1 Champion. His only loss that year was in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA in overtime to a wrestler weighing 300lbs. Steve wrestled when there were no limitations to weight in the heavy weight division. As a result of Steve’s outstanding accomplishments during the NJSIAA tournament the Bergen Record selected Steve Hovey as Athlete of the Week. In football, Steve played both defensive end and tackle during his tenure. Steve earned three varsity letters and was named to the all-suburban, all-league and all-county teams. Steve continued to wrestle and play football after Ramapo High School at the collegiate level at Lycoming College. He played two years of football and three years on the wrestling team in the 190lb division. Presently, Steve owns his own business named Corporate Environments and lives in Annandale, New Jersey with his wife Nancy and two daughters, Courtney 24 years old and Megan 21 years old. In Steve’s free time, he enjoys bicycling, skiing and hiking.
