Prentice Beers

Prentice Beers was Ramapo’s first football coach and, as such, helped pave the way for much of the football success the school enjoys today. Prentice began at Ramapo in 1958 as a coach and math teacher, a position he held for twelve years. Ramapo is also where he met his wife Evelyn, who was a business teacher. They have been married for more than 60 years.

Prentice’s route to Ramapo was a circuitous one; he graduated from Washington High School (N.J.) in 1938 and enrolled at UNC-Chapel Hill where he was a guard on the football team and a point on the lacrosse team. When the war broke out, Prentice enlisted in the Navy and spent the next three and a half years on a destroyer in the Pacific theater. At the war’s end, Prentice re-entered school at Muhlenberg College, where he was a two year starter at tackle and the team’s captain his senior year. After graduation and having caught the coaching bug, Prentice coached and taught math at Washington High, North Hunterdon High and Palmyra High School before settling in at Ramapo.

His inaugural season at Ramapo his team went 4-3-2. Then, in 1962, his team went 7-1 and won their first NBIL title and Prentice was the “All-Suburban Coach of the Year”. His 1964 team went 8-1, a record that stood for 19 years, and his twelve-year record at Ramapo was 54-40-5. Prentice retired from Ramapo in 1969, but he didn’t retire from coaching. He coached at Palmyra and Cinnaminson High School until finally ending his coaching career in 1974.

Prentice and his wife Evelyn presently reside at Shannondell, a beautiful retirement community in Audubon, PA, near the home of their son Tracy and daughter-in-law Linda and their daughter Judy Hollinger and son-in-law Herb. The Beers have six grandchildren and are predeceased by two sons, Jeffery and David. These days, Prentice likes to reminisce about his old friends at Ramapo; Hank Boggio, Henry Rumana, Stretch Pol, Hal Coizzi, Janet Dunning, Dave Ross and many others.
