Peter Crandall

Pete Crandall won six varsity letters at Ramapo—two in football and one in basketball, but it is for the three he won in baseball that this gifted player is most remembered.

The 1973 graduate was Ramapo’s center fielder and lead-off hitter. A three-year starter, he batted over .313 in his sophomore year and .340 his junior year. It was in his senior year that he finished his great career by hitting .465, with an on-base average of .617. For that sensational season, Pete earned All-League, All-Suburban, All-County, All-Area, and All-State honors by both The Star Ledger and The Daily News. He also represented New Jersey in the New Jersey/New York All-Star Game at Shea Stadium.

Moving on to Ithaca College, Pete was a four-year starter and averaged .322 for his career. During his junior year, he hit .320 with 56 walks as his team went 35-9 and placed second in the NCAA Division 3 World Series. While at Ithaca his team had a 90-26 record and played in three post-season tournaments. His team’s catalyst, Pete set season and career marks for walks and had a career on-base percentage over .500. He also made only three errors in 116 games. For his efforts, Pete earned Honorable Mention in District 2 his junior year as well as All-Upstate N.Y., and All-ICAC Conference honors and was the team captain his senior year. He received the “Bucky Freeman” Award for contributions to Ithaca baseball for four years.
During the summer months, Pete played for a number of AAU and semi-pro teams and never hit under .300 or failed to make the league All-Star team.

Pete and his wife Pamela reside in Emerson and have two children; Lisa, 19, and Kevin 17. A physical education teacher at the Park Ridge Elementary School, he also coaches, of course, baseball, as well as basketball and volleyball at Park Ridge High. He has earned Coach of the Year honors for volleyball, where he has more than 200 wins. He has over 100 wins each in baseball and basketball as well. In 2006 he has awarded the Baldwin-Hunt Award by the Bergen County Baseball Coaches Association.
