Coach Paul Heenehan

There are not many people who pass through the halls of Ramapo who haven’t heard of (or heard, for that matter) Paul Heenehan. A consummate “local boy…done good”, Paul Heenehan has been an institution at Ramapo as a student, a coach, and a teacher.

Coach Heenehan has been with the Ramapo Girls Soccer Program since its inception in 1978 and has amassed staggering statistics. To date, his record is 586 wins, 58 losses, and 31 ties, with one NSCAA National Championship (1996), eleven New Jersey State Championships, fourteen trips to the New Jersey State Finals, nineteen New Jersey Group 3 North 1 Sectional Championships, twelve Bergen County Tournament Championships, nineteen trips to the Bergen County Tournament Finals, and twenty-two North Bergen Interscholastic League Championships. Coach Heenehan’s teams have had two winning streaks of 45 and of 60 games and two 66 game unbeaten streaks, along with five undefeated seasons and being named Star Ledger New Jersey Team of the Year in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1996, and 1997.

There have been thirty sets of siblings who have played soccer for Coach Heenehan and there have been fourteen NSCAA All-Americans. Graduates of the Ramapo Girls Soccer Program have played and continue to play soccer for colleges and universities from coast to coast.

While developing the Ramapo Girls soccer Program, Paul Heenehan has been recognized on many levels. He has been named Bergen County Coach of the Year 7 times; Star Ledger State Coach of the Year for 1981; New Jersey Girls Soccer Coaches Association (NJGSCA) State Coach of the Year for 1996; NJGSCA North Section Coach of the Year for 1991, 1996, and 2007; National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Girls Secondary National Coach of the Year for 1996; National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Girls Secondary 	Regional Coach of the Year: 1982, 1991, and 1996; NSCAA New Jersey State Coach of the Year for 1996 and 2003; NSCAA Robert Robertson High School Long Time Achievement Award for 2003; National Federation of High Schools Girls Soccer National Coach of the Year for 2004;

Soccer notwithstanding, Coach Heenehan has also had an impact on Ramapo’s track program. He served as Girls Head Coach from 1984-1987 and had a 42-8 dual meet record. In 1986 he went undefeated (11-0) and beat Westwood to end their 83 meet
winning streak (seven Ramapo records were broken that year) and earned Bergen County Coach of the Year honors. He also served as Boys Head Coach from 1991-1994, as an Assistant Track Coach from 1979-1983 and has continued as an Assistant Track Coach since 1995.

Paul lives in Franklin Lakes with his wife, Marian, and two sons, Patrick and Sean, who both attend and play football at Ithaca College. Paul continues to teach and coach at Ramapo High School.
