Michael Miello

Football has played an important part in Mike Miello’s life. From his time as a player in high school, then at the University of Rhode Island, to his various coaching positions at the college and high school level, then finally to Ramapo in 1978, football has been a staple in Mike’s life. Even though his tenure at Ramapo is the defining point on his coaching resume, Mike has coached on the high school level, the college level—at both URI and Rutgers—and continues to coach today at William Paterson University.

The honors Mike has accumulated over the course of his career come from a “who’s who” of civic and cultural organizations, like Unico and YMCA, both of whom named him their Person of the Year. However, if you ask Mike which honors he is proudest of, he will probably say the football related achievements. He has received the Gerald R. Ford Award from the All American Football Foundation, the New heresy Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the New jersey Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and has nine times been honored by his peers as Coach of the Year.

Mike’s tenure as Ramapo Head football coach and Athletic Director ran from 1978-2000. As the football coach, he won four Conference Championships and four State Championships and compiled a record of 144-71-1. Among the many college-caliber football players he developed are Greg Schiano and Chris Simms, who were both recently honored here. It was under Mike Miello that Ramapo football became a powerhouse in New Jersey. Mike also holds the unique distinction of winning a State Championship in each of four different decades.

As an Athletic Director, Mike ran an athletic program more extensive than many in the state and helped guide Ramapo sports to the lofty status we now enjoy. When looking at the winning banners Ramapo has accumulated, most of them were won under Mike’s watchful eye. In his role as an AD, Mike was again honored by his peers; this time, however, as Bergen County Athletic Director of the Year. Mike and his wife Diane have two married daughters, Dawn and Denise, and reside in River Edge, New Jersey. When you look at Mike’s resume, it lists his profession as a football coach.
