Coach Kim Marchese

A 1970 Indian Hills graduate, Kim Marchese has had a tremendous impact on our district for nearly forty years as both a student-athlete and as a multi-sport Ramapo coach. Kim was a standout tennis player at Indian Hills and served as Captain in his senior year. After Hills, Kim attended Montclair State and continued with tennis, serving as Team Captain, earning First-Team All-Conference honors (doubles), and winning the New Jersey State Collegiate Doubles Championship with teammate Kevin Schmitt.

Coach Marchese came to Ramapo in 1974 as a math teacher and started coaching immediately. In his first year at Ramapo, Kim started the Ice Hockey program and served as Head Coach from 1975 through 1979—the first two years with no pay! Starting the hockey program is still one of Coach Marchese’s proudest accomplishments. Later in his career Coach Marchese briefly went back to hockey, serving as Assistant Varsity Coach at Indian Hills from 2001 to 2004. Kim also coached Frosh Soccer and Girls Junior Varsity basketball, but the area where he is most recognized is boys and girls tennis.

Coach Marchese headed up the Ramapo Boys Tennis team from 1979 through 1995 then again in 1997 and the Indian Hills team from 1999 to 2002, compiling a Raider record of 332 wins against 82 losses and a Braves record of 49-29. The Raiders teams under Coach Marchese were incredibly successful: NBIL titles from 1984 through 1985 (IH 2002); County titles in 1985, 1989 through 1992, and again in 1994; State Sectional titles in 1984, 1985, 1998 through 1995, and in 1997; State titles in 1985, 1988, 1989, and 1991 through 1994; and a Tournament of Champions title in 1985. He has been elected four times by his fellow coaches as the Boys Tennis Coach of the Year.

Kim has also served as the Girls Tennis coach at Ramapo, first taking the reins in 1978, then again permanently in 1985. In his twenty-five years as Girls Head Coach, Kim’s teams have a 486-67 record and numerous titles: NBIL titles in 1975, 1985 and 1986, from 1988-2002, and 2004-2008; County titles 1986, from 1989-1997, 2001, 2006, and 2008; State Sectional titles in 1986, 1990, 1991, 1993 -1998, and 2006-2008; and State titles in 1986, 1991, 1994, and 1995. He has received Girls Tennis Coach of the Year honors 3 times. Kim has also been inducted into the NJSIAA Hall of Fame and the Oakland Recreation Hall of Fame.

Kim continues to teach math at Ramapo and to coach the Girls Tennis team. He lives in Oakland with his wife Linda and their two children, Kevin (24) and Michelle (21). He is the Director of a Tennis camp (for 30 years now), and enjoys skiing, tennis, and platform tennis.
