John McKiernan
Special Contributor

John McKiernan is Ramapo High School’s #1 fan. “Big John”, as he is affectionately known, began his Ramapo “Fan Career” while watching his friends daughter play softball for Ramapo in 1984. In 1986, John’s son, James entered Ramapo High School as a freshman and became a member of the Ramapo High School Marching Band. And John starting attending the football games in order to watch his son perform in the band. Aside from the 1990 thru 1993 seasons, when Big John went to the Notre Dame Football games to watch his son in the Notre Dame marching band, John has attended every Ramapo Varsity Football game.

During James’s high school years, Big John started attending boys’ and girl’s soccer games and baseball games. In the mid 90’s he added boys and girls basketball and in the last couple of years he added volleyball, girl’s fencing and girl’s lacrosse. As a matter of fact, each new sports season at Ramapo High School is not signified by the appointed start date, but rather by Big John showing up at the AD’s office looking for the schedule and the rosters of the teams – which is especially important, for John has to make up his schedule for the season. If there are scheduling conflicts, Big John will decide which team needs him more. And, in addition to his astute scheduling, John studies the roster so he can learn the players’ faces and their names and cheer for each individual player.

When you attend a Ramapo High School athletic contest, no matter how loud the crowd is, you will hear Big John signature cheer, LET’S GO PO!!! Big John is like the post office, no matter what the weather; John will be at the game. Big John is an integral part of the Ramapo High School Athletic Department and the relationship between the athletes and Big John is outstanding. He is the Grandfather to the Ramapo Athletic program and always has words of encouragement to offer. He makes all the athletes feel special and there is not a more caring man on this planet.

Last year John was honored by the Bergen County Coaches Association for his contributions to the Ramapo High School Athletic program and this year we would like to officially recognize him for his contributions to the school, the athletic program, the community, and all the lives – players, coaches, friends and families he has touched.
