Through the decades, Ramapo Fencing has been synonymous with excellence. The driving force behind this analogy has been John Cilio. As Ramapo’s fencing coach for twenty-two years, John’s accomplishments have earned him a national reputation in the sport he has literally devoted his whole life to. His accomplishments are truly remarkable and should be read slowly as to be absorbed. In the twenty-two years as Head fencing coach John’s teams won 21 District 3 Championships. At one point he won sixteen District 2 Titles in a row. From 1980 through 1985 he won five State Championships, and from 1990-2002 he won eight more. His record for a dual meet is a staggering 246-15. His total win record on the high school level is over 400 victories. John has turned out four State Foil Champions, four State Epee Champions, seven State Sabre Champions, and District Champions too numerous to list. John’s national awards include National Federation of Interscholastic Coaches Association State Distinguished Service Award for the “Outstanding Coach” in 1984 and that same organization’s Coach of the Year in 2000. He is also a member of the Century Victory Club. The Star Ledger named him Coach of the Year several times and Fencing coach of the Decade for the 1980’s. He also appeared in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd column. A 1966 graduate of William Patterson University, he is also a member of their Hall of Fame. As a college Fencer he was North Atlantic Collegiate Individual Champion in sabre, a member of two North Atlantic Team Championships and the New Jersey State Champion in the USFA Open. A retired teacher, John and his wife Nancy have three children; David, Todd and Jodie, and are enjoying their new home in Arlington, Vermont. He still stays active hiking, playing golf, and skiing.
