George Hopper

A member of the class of 1965, George Hopper was an impact player for Ramapo on many levels and through many decades.

As an athlete, George lettered in football and track for the Raiders. He was a three-year starter at nose tackle and was also the kickoff man. During track season, he threw the shot put. During his time at Ramapo as a student and athlete, George galvanized his class. In the words of his classmate and teammate, Will Anderson, “George was like the sun, everything revolved around him.” George’s influence on the school then didn’t end at graduation, as he was pivotal in keeping the class together over the next forty years.

George contributed to the Ramapo community after graduation, as well. He was a Security Guard here for twenty years, where he not only performed the proscribed duties, but also served as a mentor, coach, teacher, and counselor. George did what he could for the kids whenever he had the chance. George also served as the Voice of Ramapo and announced football games for sixteen ears. His booming voice, his zeal at the microphone, and his rapport with the coaches, players, and fans is legendary—so much so that the new Announcer’s Booth has been dedicated in George’s memory.

George also served the community through his leadership of the Wyckoff Recreational Football League. He helped to make this a true feeder system for Ramapo High School by coordinating programs—and colors, switching the Rec teams to green and white—with those of the Varsity Raiders.

George was a loyal and dedicated member of the Ramapo family whose name and memory will live on well into the future.
