Francois J. “Frenchy” Was Class of 1961 Football Basketball Track A winner of seven varsity letters, Frenchy Was excelled in three sports, namely, football, basketball and outdoor track. A three year varsity letter winner in football and captain his senior year, Frenchy was named to the first team All-Suburban and to the first team All-League for two years. His senior year he was selected to the first team All-County and was also chosen for the All-State Group 3 football team. In basketball, he was named to the first team All-League in addition received recognition to the All-Suburban, All-County and All-State Group 3 teams. Basketball coach Hal Corizzi at last year’s induction dinner recognized Frenchy Was as an important athlete in the inaugural years of athletics at Ramapo High School. Coach Corizzi said, “Frenchy was a talented and a great all-round basketball player”. Frenchy Was also won letters in track his junior and senior years where he set a school record at the time for the shot put with a throw of 45’ 7 ¼ ” as a senior. Frenchy was named to the All-Suburban track team his senior year. After graduation, Frenchy Was earned a football scholarship to play at Wagner College where he earned three letters and was named to the All-East College Division Team in 1963. Frenchy is presently a managing partner of a Retail Real Estate Consulting firm and lives in Franklin Lakes with his wife Lois, a Ramapo graduate herself, and are the parents of two grown sons Darren and Jeff. Frenchy and Lois are also proud grandparents of 15 month old Ava and spend most of their free time traveling and spending time at their Fort Lauderdale home.
