Cathy Maso Gianelli

Cathy Maso Gianelli excelled in a sport with a longstanding record of excellence at Ramapo: tennis. However, this 1979 graduate was so proficient at the game—and, surely this must be a first, that she was granted permission by the NJSIAA to play for the boy’s tennis team in her senior year.

Cathy compiled a 49-1 career record at Ramapo and during her varsity tenure she led her team to County and State Championships. As a freshman, she was a state singles finalist; in 1975 she was the NJSIAA Singles Champion and went undefeated. In 1977 she was named The Record’s Athlete of the Week. Cathy was also two-time Bergen County Singles Champion, and was ranked number one in her age group by the Eastern Tennis Association in her senior year. She eventually earned a full scholarship to the University of Miami.
At Miami, Cathy played number one or number two during all four of her years. In those four years, Miami was ranked in the top five teams in the country. Upon graduation, Cathy turned pro and joined the WTA tour for five years, playing against stars such as Pam Shriver, Andrea Jaeger, Pam Casales, Tracy Austin and Gabriella Sabatini.

Cathy was fortunate enough to have excellent coaches, but she feels it was the dedication of her parents—her Dad was her first coach and her Mom drove her to practices all over north Jersey—that enabled her to achieve such success.

After tearing ankle ligaments for the fifth time, Cathy’s orthopedist sent to her Jay Gianelli for physical therapy, who not only successfully rehab-ed her ankle, but eventually married her. Cathy can still be found playing and teaching tennis privately, as well as coaching and training several past and present Ramapo tennis players. Currently living in Wyckoff, Cathy has a 15-year old daughter, Emily and an 11-year old son, Nick. Both she and Jay are Eucharistic Ministers at St. Elizabeth’s in Wyckoff. Always the competitor, Cathy has taken up horseback riding and jumping and has entered a number of shows.
